Minutes for April 5, 2000
Ramkota Inn - Aberdeen, SD
Rod Dobberpuhl from Student Loan Finance Corporation gave an Update. He talked about the changes in credit processing which is quicker for students. He also gave an update on the SLFC web page - Students will soon be able to apply, and check on previous loans, payoffs, and deferments. Students will get quick response. Rod told us about their office in Sioux Falls. This is a branch office that handles programming.
Paula Carlson and Clark Wold presented an EAC Update.
Paula gave us operational updates. She was happy to tell us about our low default rates for another year. She also told us that EAC was the 2nd highest in nation for recovery rate. They are very pleased with this.
On May 25th in Mitchell a symposium will be held to cover information on how to lower default rates and will show results of research done on students who pay back their student loans and those who do not. This symposium will also cover credit counseling, talking about entrance and exit counseling and what schools are doing to lower their default rates.
Paula touched on the process of imaging that has been set up in their office. This will not effect output to our offices. Employees will now have instant access to information.
Paula told SDASFAA that they are doing verification for the Enrollment Service Center. If other campuses need some help just let them know.
EAC has been busy with their workshops, producing their online REACH product, and are getting ready for the EAC summer institute for high school counselors to be held June 14 - 16.
Clark Wold told us that EAC will not charge the guaranty fee for students again this year. They are pleased to be able to help the students.
Clark and Paula will be doing college president visits to say thank you for their business and ask how EAC is doing - if they are hearing anything. They would also like to know what else they can do for the schools. Financial Aid Officers should check with their Presidents to see if he/she would want them to sit in on this meeting.
Clark is looking forward to hearing speaker Jim Farmer at the Advisory board meeting. Jim was with EMI with whom EAC bought their first processing system. Has remained with software and technology.
EAC believes they should be involved. They are currently involved at the all levels; NSLDS, NACHA(National Automated Clearing House Association) helps industries move data around. NECHELP, Default Management Committee, Commonline, Student Loans Servicing Association, Program Operations - Common Manual Policy Committee and MPN, Mapping Your Future, state and regional associations.
BUSINESS MEETING
The meeting was called to order by President David Vikander. No written agenda was given.
Treasurer's Report
Brenda Murtha gave out the balance statement as of March 31st. SDASFAA is sitting in good shape. We didn't have to dip into our savings account last year. Good checking account balance. We do have Spring Conference expenses and income that need to be put in. If you have any questions let Brenda know.
The Miscellaneous income of 3 dollars was from a collection that Brenda had to make from Henry High School. They had written her a bad check for the High School Counselors workshop. This is the amount she charged them.
Renee Leach made a motion to accept the Balance Statement, seconded by Rosie Jamison, all in favor, motion passed.
RMASFAA 2000 Update
Donna Johnson and Deb Henriksen gave us a RMASFAA 2000 Update. Committees had previously met during the conference. Everything is going good. Anyone that is not on a committee should contact them.
SDASFAA Committees
David gave us a short update on our current SDASFAA Committees and how the Executive Council will be looking into these to see where we should go with them. Do we feel that all of these committees are necessary or can we cut some out?
Rosie Jamison wanted to know if we would let the association know what is going on before any final decisions are made. David said he would put information out on web to get comments before any decisions would be made. David said the committee will meet within the next few weeks.
ListServe Update
Peggy Kuck from EAC told the association that any changes to the listserve can be updated or let her know if changes need to be made. This is the only way to keep the list current. David stated that we need correct e-mail addresses. Renee Leach serves on the RMASFAA Publications Committee and would also like to see this happening. She relies on this listserve for the movers and shakers for RMASFAA.
David advised us to check our emails - get in habit of doing this. He will not be having paper newsletters.
Kermit said that we can use the listserve to supplement what is going out on SDASFAA web page. This way people know what they should be looking for and what is on webpage.
Summer Institute
Deb Henriksen talked about summer institute that will be held in Colorado Springs June 2 - 9. David advised people to attend. This is a great training for new people in financial aid.
Spring Conference
David reported that the next spring conference will be held West River. The location will be decided at the next Executive Council meeting.
Other Business
SDASFAA held a drawing for Dakota products that will be the centerpiece at each table next fall for RMASFAA. Sheree Brend was the winner.
Rosie Jamison gave recognition to the conference committee. All agreed that they did a wonderful job. Much thanks to Peggy Kuck for all her hard work.
Grant Uecker made a motion to adjourn the meeting, seconded by Glen Poppinga, all approved, motion passed.
Respectfully submitted,
Pamela J. Lane
Secretary
